Artist Statement

I construct spaces by curating sensory experiences and physical interactions. Due to the pandemic, there have been objects or situations that have resulted in a lack of sensibility and tactility. In my recent work, ‘Grab’, I displayed similar sizes and shapes of 20 knobs on a door. I utilised various materials such as silicone, resin and clay to create diverse tactile experiences. In other recent works, 73 series, I attached silicone sculptures to handrails to improve accessibility. The contrast between a fixed form of the handrail and the irregular shape of sculptures not only highlights the differences of texture and shapes but also encourages an immersive tactile experience for the audience.

My intention is to create a new form of documentation that allows the audience to freely respond to the work; even observations of the audience’s hand shapes and postures are considered part of the work. Thus, building interactions with the audience has led me to emerge from the exploration of art.

Biogrpahy

Born in 2002 in Seoul, South Korea and currently lives and works in Seoul. She graduated from the North London Collegiate School (NLCS), Jeju Island and the Slade School of Art, University College London (UCL).

During her five years in Jeju, Minsuh went to Seoul once a month for short school holidays. In 2019, her exploration of human behaviours, particularly addiction, expanded the boundaries of art beyond traditional media such as paintings and drawings. Since 2021, she created more experimental works and extended her practice into multidisciplinary art forms such as sculpture, performance and photography. After she graduated from NLCS, she took a gap year in 2020 to refine and develop her work. Then she got interested in the place that people were not interested in. Hence, she tried to find a hidden gap and space that people would not care about.

Her journey continued when she moved to London in 2021, where she encountered a stark contrast in pandemic regulations between the UK and South Korea. The regulations on COVID-19 in South Korea were extremely strict. Thus, she decided to explore it further with a medium that separates space: doors and handles, to depict her recent life in between the contrary environment. In 2022, she was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, leading her to prioritise her health due to an overactive thyroid.

Given her history of frequent residential movements, the environment is significant and sensitive importance to her. Also, it let her be an adaptive person. Hence, the continuous environmental changes and health conditions increased her sensitivity to her fundamental senses.
